Easy Feel Good Food For
Wild Camping, Hiking And Backpacking
The One Pot Crumble

I suppose when your choosing bugout food, camp food, hiking or backpacking food, three main things come to mind.

  • Compact, light and easy to carry
  • Easy to make, uses only one pot
  • Delicious feel good food

In this article I show the recipe and my method for making a delicious apple crumble, using only one pot.

This is definitely a camp favourite, which can also be made with foraged fruits when in season.
I like the simplicity of this one pot crumble, and normally make it in one pot and also eat it from that pot as well, making it double efficient...

Here's what to do -

For one person I have found that a decent sized cooking apple is enough fruit, along with 1/2 - 3/4 sachet of custard powder and 3 hobnob biscuits.

  • Simply peel the apple and slice into chunks, then add water to level with apples and bring to boil.
Stir occasionally, and keep the pot lid on.
  • Put the Hob Nobs in a zip bag and tap lightly to crush them up into fine pieces.
  • Allow to simmer for 1/2 hour, stirring occasionally, and checking apples are getting soft.
  • Add the custard powder (small amounts at a time) and stir into mix - do not add too much as the mix will thicken.
Next add the crushed Hob Nobs and spread evenly.
  • Lastly, give the pot a final simmer until it starts to bubble at the top.
